The Naturalistic masks were developed by Vicky Wright in a research project in 2014. Working with a group of performers these masks were created direct from the performers faces. The normal process for casting the face is one where all the muscles are relaxed (as it takes 10-15mins). Using these, the lack of expression creates a type of “death mask”. These are powerful when played & have a type of unworldliness to them.
In this project, we explored the base volume of different faces & the influence of introducing subtle emotions. We were able to cast these subtle shifts & they created masks that played well. It was a successful method in developing a new style of masks.
