One of the top 5 picks to watch by TheStage.com at The Vaults Festival this year was the evocative piece Alienland, brought to life by the talented physical performer Mo’min Swaitat.
Mo’min has a physical theatre background from training at LISPA, a school with a Lecoq-based approach to mask, movement and devising new pieces of theatre.
With the support of the Sarha Collective and producer Nadia Jaglom, he developed this spell-binding work. Alien Land is a devised solo show inspired by The Secret Life of Saeed the Pessoptimist, the first science fiction novel in the Middle East. Performed in Arabic with English subtitles, it is a dark comedy which looks at life under occupation and the contemporary refugee experience from a radical new perspective.
In the dream like storytelling, Mo’min uses masks to transform into a myriad of characters.
The masks used are those made by Vicky Wright, the main mask-maker behind Making Faces Theatre. As a stylistic choice Mo’min chose masks from across the styles of mask from larval, full mask & half mask, alongside an additional horse mask, naked & later painted face on stage. This is a piece about identity & the human layers of mask.
The show will be touring the UK & Europe over the next 6 months. For more information visit: www.sarhacollective.com/projects/
